Jules Schmelzer
Writer, Director

I have no doubt in my mind that this film will give off a very strong personal imprint and will greatly reflect who I am as a filmmaker, not only because of the story, but also how I intend to express and portray this story. “The Way They Should Be” depicts two gay men who are essentially forced to conform to societies expectations, but in turn shows their strength as characters and proves that society did not/cannot change who they are as people. This story and the experiences that the two main characters go through end up just making them stronger and adding to their own unique stories, as well as strengthening their bond even further. I believe that every filmmaker has their own unique visual style where you see it and you just know that it was made by that person. Even though I am in the very beginning of my filmmaking career, I believe that I have a very strong and unique style when it comes to filmmaking in terms of visuals and in terms of editing. I really love to tell dark, gruesome stories that depict the truth. I always tell stories that the audience can relate to, and one thing I love to do is tell these heartbreaking stories with a contrasting visual style; beautiful, almost stylistic visuals. This film in particular does just that. I plan on breaking conventional styles of filmmaking, as the conventional way of doing things has never been my style. I want this film to be weird and unique, I want it to make my audience uncomfortable, I want it to take them on an absolute roller coaster ride of emotions, thoughts, and perspectives. I plan to do all of this through my unique style of making films that I am very confident in. With this film, all I hope is that I will make an emotional impact on anybody who watches it, no matter their views on the topic.
